The Simple Things Can Be the Most Challenging for Someone with Alzheimer’s
There’s an old adage that says, “It’s the simple things in life that make all the difference.” That can be true, but for somebody dealing with Alzheimer’s, it’s the simple things that can cause the greatest challenges.
Getting through each day can be a challenge.
Whether a person has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or has been dealing with the signs and symptoms of this disease for many years, they will be facing certain challenges in life. One of those challenges can be keeping track of conversations.
They may be clear that they talked to somebody the previous day, but no matter what they do they cannot seem to recall what the conversation was about. How frustrating is that going to be? Just imagine if you had a memory related problem where you knew you did something the previous day but just couldn’t put your finger on what it was.
That senior can begin focusing on that event so much that they can’t concentrate on anything else. The more they try to recall the conversation, the more frustrated they might become. Suddenly that simple memory or recollection takes on a life of its own and can cause a great deal of frustration and anger.
Finding certain items can also be a struggle.
Where did they leave the keys to the house? What about that appointment they had coming up? If they have certain items that need to be found, such as a calendar, appointment, keys to the house, or something else, and they can’t, for the life of them, find it, that can lead to a great deal of anxiety and frustration.
Think about the last time you lost your car keys. Maybe you weren’t in a rush, but most of the time we have places to go, things to do, and even people to visit. We can’t spend half an hour or an hour or longer trying to look for those keys. Yet, every once in a while we lose things and get frustrated because we can’t find them.
For somebody dealing with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, that situation can be an everyday thing. With those frustrations building each day, it’s going to lead to significant problems in their life.
Quality care and support are going to help this senior tremendously through the years ahead. Keeping them calm, rational, and focused, even when they can’t remember certain things, can provide comfort and keep them from getting too frustrated, too angry, and too aggressive.
