Caregiver Tips: Starting Journaling in the New Year
Caregivers in Winchester, VA
The new year is a time for fresh opportunities, reflection, and feeling a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for what lies ahead of you. This can be especially meaningful in your caregiver journey as you look back on the year that you spent with your aging loved ones, and forward at the time that you will spend together in the year ahead. Not only is this a chance for you to start making plans, resolutions, and goals for what you want to accomplish and achieve with your seniors in the new year, but a time for you to connect with yourself and your emotions so you can explore what your role as a family caregiver has meant in your life and what you want to remember about it going forward.
According to research by the University of Texas at Austin, regular journaling can offer a variety of benefits, including:
- Reduction of chronic pain
- Lower stress and anxiety
- Lower blood pressure
- Clarifying your thoughts and feelings about different situations
- Improved problem-solving skills
- Improved perspective on situations, allowing you to work through them and maintain relationships better
In the context of your caregiver journey, a journal is a way for you to work through your emotions and a way to record what you are going through so that someday you can look back on it and remember the little things that are easy to forget in the busyness and stress of daily life. This journal can even act as a basis for you to reach out and help others with your experiences through a caregiver support group, blog, or other method.
The new year is a fantastic time to start journaling because it is a fresh starting point. Use these tips to help you get the most out of your journaling experience starting in the new year:
- Choose the right book. Journaling on a computer can offer benefits, but actually putting pen to paper opens creativity and encourages freer thought. This does not mean, however, that you need to purchase an expensive journal. Simply choose a book that you like and that inspires you, whether it is a simple spiral notebook or a leather bound volume with recycled paper. What matters is that you will enjoy picking it up and writing in it every day
- Date the pages. Even if right now you do not think that you will ever go back through and read your entries, take the time to date every entry that you write and clearly separate the entries. This will allow you to keep your thoughts organized and let you follow the progression of your thoughts if you do want to read through them at a later time
- Start the month with goals. At the beginning of each month write an entry that lists your hopes and goals for the month. Talk about the things that you want to accomplish and what you are looking forward to. This will get you excited for the month ahead and gives you a chance to plan in a way that is private just for you
- End the month with a recap. At the end of the month right another entry that talks about what you accomplished during the month, your favorite memories, and responses to what you had planned for the month. This is a good way to ensure you are reflecting and growing at set points throughout the year
- Be honest. This journal is just for you. No one is going to read it unless you give permission, so be open and honest. Express your emotions fully, explore your thoughts, and record things as they happened. This will give you the most benefit and a clear view of your experience when you look back in the future.
