Aging in Place IS Possible with the Right Home Care Options
A growing number of seniors who may have difficulty with daily tasks would prefer to remain in the comfort of their home as opposed to other facilities or options. This is commonly referred to as ‘aging in place’ and it is possible for those who have the right type of support on hand.
Home care is one of the best options for those seniors who want to age in place or remain home where they are comfortable for the rest of their lives, or as long as possible. Not all home care options are created the same, though, so it’s important to understand what the senior requires and what is available in their specific area.
Determining the needs of the senior.
One of the first steps in finding the right home care options for an aging senior is to determine what he or she requires at this point in their life. For example, some seniors may need direct medical assistance at home.
This would most likely be provided by a visiting nurse, or sometimes referred to as a home health care provider. A basic home care aide who can assist with various tasks of everyday life may not have the certification or licensure to assist with direct medical assistance. Therefore, a home health care aide would likely be necessary.
However, if the senior also requires assistance with bathing or toileting, preparing meals, and so forth, he or she would benefit from a home care aide. If they also require some direct medical attention, a home health care provider may have to stop by for a brief amount of time a few days a week, for example.
If the elderly person only needs assistance getting up in the morning, getting into the shower, getting dressed, and so forth and then can take care of themselves for the remainder of the day, a home care aide would be of great benefit.
Does that senior require full-time care?
If the elderly person only needs help for a couple of hours a day, they don’t need somebody to work with him eight hours a day, five days a week. For that, a home care agency would obviously be a better option because of the flexibility of scheduling.
Also, home care agencies tend to employ more experienced, dedicated caregivers who are truly devoted to the best interests, safety, and quality of life for their clients. When home care is the best option, turn to an agency for support.
