Neighbors Can Be Instrumental at Keeping Dad Safer at Home
Elder Care in Frederick County VA
Your father has lived in the same place for many years. Perhaps he’s been widowed and living alone for five or more years. He may have a lot of friends living in the area who visit, but in recent years things have changed. You’re now concerned about his safety.
Maybe his friends have begun moving away, passing away, or are no longer stopping by to visit with him daily like they used to. You don’t live so close that it makes a lot of sense for you to stop by every day to check in on him, but despite your requests, maybe even some admonishments, he doesn’t call you to check in, either.
Your father is a proud, independent individual.
It’s difficult for people who take care of themselves for most of their adult life, even taking care of their own family, to begin asking for help or admitting they’re struggling with some aspects of their own basic care. Your father may be dealing with some of these challenges as well.
How can you be a proper support system and make sure he’s safe?
The best thing you can do is talk to him about hiring a home care aide. Of course, he might get adamant that he doesn’t need some other individual checking in on him and treating him like a child. You don’t want to offend him and you want to respect his decision to remain as independent as he wants to.
However, you also want to ensure he’s safe.
If he’s refusing any type of professional and experienced home care support, look to his neighbors to help you in this type of situation. He may have a number of neighbors who are close to him, who have had conversations with him through the years, and who want it’s best for him.
They may be more than willing to help you for a while. They can check on him, support him and assist him with certain things, such as taking out the garbage or going to the store, and much more.
Neighbors may be more than willing to help, but they will never replace the value that home care providers offer, especially those who have a lot of experience in doing this type of work for other seniors.
When it comes to safety concerns, you don’t want to spend too many sleepless nights staring into the dark wondering if your father is okay; talk to him about home care services and if he refuses right now, see if he has neighbors who might be willing to check in on him. Over time, they might be able to convince him to consider home care services, too.
