Why Won’t Mom Consider Any Home Care Options?
Home Care in Fairfax County VA
It’s one of the most frustrating things you can imagine. Your mother, in her 70s, is clearly having difficulty with their mobility. She’s had a few health scares recently, and while you’ve been trying to support her, you don’t live that close to her and you have a busy schedule. You want her to consider home care options, but she won’t even listen to that.
“Why can’t you take care of me?” She might say.
When you begin answering, she starts countering with ideas that you don’t really care about her, you just want to pass her off, and you prefer her to just go to a nursing home where she can fade away.
That’s not the case at all. However, the things she says may still hurt. There could be a number of reasons why she’s not even considering home care options.
She may have certain misconceptions about it.
Most people, when they flat out refuse to consider certain options in their life, are doing so because of misinformation. She might have various misconceptions about it. She might assume home care is unsafe, too costly, or a sign that the beginning of the end of her life is here.
She may not realize it offers an opportunity for her to get more active, spend time with friends, and be encouraged to pursue certain things that are of interest to her.
She may think it’s too expensive.
As we just mentioned, she may worry about the cost of home care options. However, compared to any other elder care option out there, it’s the most affordable one. She can hire somebody for just two hours a day once or twice a week to start. Maybe that’s all the help she really needs.
However, those couple of hours once or twice a week is taking a serious toll on you because of the drive to get to her and back and all of the other things you have going on in your life.
She doesn’t see the point.
If a person doesn’t see the benefits of something, why would they consider it? The more you learn about home care options and the benefits it offers, the easier it’s going to be for you to answer questions or counterclaims she makes about it.
She assumes you have time.
Maybe she’s never realized just how busy you are. If she assumes you have the time to take care of her, why would she consider anything else?
