Home Care Issues: Should Your Aging Loved Ones be Using Natural Deodorizing Products?
Home Care in Manassas VA
Hygiene and cleanliness are an important part of everyone’s day, and if you are on a home care journey with your aging loved ones it is possible that you are also helping your seniors handle their hygiene needs as well. While doing this one of the steps that you probably use for yourself and your seniors is using an antiperspirant and deodorant product to keep down your sweating and keep you smelling fresh.
According to the National Cancer Institute, however, many studies suggest that using conventional antiperspirant and deodorant products could be dangerous to your health. These products contain aluminum chemicals and parabens that can soak through the skin and build up in the tissues, potentially leading to an increased risk of cancers, particularly breast cancer. Aluminum-based compounds are also thought to mimic the effect of estrogen in the body which can lead to a variety of serious effects.
If you are concerned about the effects of conventional antiperspirant and deodorant products on your or your aging loved ones’ health, you do not have to resort to always feeling sweat and like you smell bad. You can make your own natural homemade deodorizing product that will leave you smelling fresh but without the potentially harmful ingredients. It is important to note that this is not truly an antiperspirant product in the same vein as those you can purchase from the store. While it will cut down on the wetness, if you are a heavy sweater, you might find that you are slightly more wet than usual and may want to reapply during the day.
All Natural Deodorant
What You Will Need
• 1/4 of a cup of arrowroot powder or cornstarch if none is available
• 1/4 of a cup of baking soda
• 6 to 8 tablespoons of coconut oil in a solid state
• A medium bowl
• A hand blender
• An old deodorant dispenser or a storage container with a lid
What to Do
• In the medium bowl, combine the baking soda and arrowroot powder/cornstarch
• Slowly add in the coconut oil
• While adding in the coconut oil, use the hand blender on low to mix until it becomes a firm, but pliable texture, about the same as commercial deodorant
• If the mixture is too wet, add more arrowroot or cornstarch powder to thicken it
• Scoop into an old deodorant dispenser or any other small container with a lid
This amount of natural deodorant usually lasts about 3 months for two people, or 5 to 6 months for one. Simply apply it in a thin layer on the underarms and allow to dry before going about your day. For extra ease in application, consider using a craft stick or a plastic smoothing stick so that the layer remains thin and even. If you expect to be particularly active in your day, consider adding one layer, dusting it over with cornstarch powder, and then adding another layer for extra protection. Try experimenting with a few drops of essential oils to give your deodorant a light fragrance that will continue to intensify as your body heat goes up.
