A Celebration of Jazz – Jazz Appreciation Month

Home Care in Warren County

April is Jazz Appreciation Month! Started at The National Museum of American History in 2002, Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) was created to celebrate the heritage and history of jazz and Home-Care-in-Warren-Countyrecognize it as an American treasure. The wonderful thing about JAM is that it can be enjoyed and celebrated by everyone. You don’t need a degree in music, any musical talent, or even the ability to read music to take part. All that’s required is an interest in learning more about jazz music.

Jazz is a form of music that was created in America. It was formed when African music, brought to the colonies by enslaved Africans, mixed with the band music of the Europeans who had colonized the land. Some believe jazz was born in New Orleans. What we know for sure is that it didn’t take long for this unique blend of music to spread across the land and eventually, all over the world. As Americans, we should all be proud to claim jazz music as our heritage.

There are many ways for your senior parent to enjoy JAM without negatively impacting their home care. Listening to jazz records, for instance. There are so many different types of jazz, one style is sure to appeal. Acid jazz, ragtime, bebop, cool jazz, and smooth jazz, to name only a few. If your parent is already a fan of jazz, consider helping them organize a listening party. This would be a fun, social event where they would invite friends over to listen to their favorite jazz records. They could even take it a step further and decorate a room inspired by a jazz theme.

They could also go to a jazz concert. It’s easy to find jazz performers in big cities. If your parent lives in a small town; however, it may be harder to find a jazz concert. If that’s the case, they can go online. Many jazz musicians have live concert recordings available on their website and/or social media page.

If your parent would like to know more about jazz and the artists who create it, The National Museum of American History has a page on their website that does just that. It has information on many of the most influential jazz musicians, as well as recordings, and stories about the artists. They won’t need to leave their house, or even change out of their pajamas.
