Innovative Apps for Seniors
Though our parents did not grow up with the level of technology we enjoy today, many of them are becoming more and more tech-savvy. They comfortably use computers, smartphones, and tablets to connect with friends and family, keep up with the latest news, and do business online. Many technology companies recognize that seniors are a valuable part of their consumer base and have begun to develop apps with seniors and their caregivers in mind. Below are some apps that improve the lives of seniors or make the task of being a caregiver easier.
Entertainment Apps:
E-Book Apps: There are lots of different e-book apps out there, and many of them offer some books for free. Some popular e-reader apps include Kindle, Kobo, Google Play Books, and iBooks. If your parent has difficulty reading the onscreen text or just prefers to listen to a good story, they may enjoy the Audible app from Amazon that allows them to purchase and download audiobooks read by famous actors and actresses as well as professional voice actors.
Apps for Movies and Television:
-There are more apps for watching shows and movies than your parent will have time for! Most major networks offer apps to watch content on a tablet, smartphone, or computer. Some of them require you to subscribe, such as Netflix, but others offer some content for free, such as a basic account through Hulu. Your parent may also be able to sign into apps for cable networks like the Food Channel, History Channel and more, using their sign-in information for their cable provider.
Health-Related Apps:
-HeartWise Blood Pressure Tracker: This app lets users enter their blood pressure, heart rate, and weight so that they can track them. The app could also be useful to caregivers who need to track changes over time.
-Pillboxie: Pillboxie is a medication organizer and reminder app. Seniors and caregivers can set up reminders with visual pill boxes so that the senior receives reminders even when the phone or tablet is asleep.
-My Medical: Use this app to track your parent’s health history in one easy to access place. Store information like blood test results and x-rays, and back them up on a computer, too. This app could be very useful in an emergency situation or if your parent is hospitalized.
Communication Apps:
-Facebook: Facebook will allow your parent to share photos and messages with friends and family members. It can be a great way to pass the time and keep in touch.
-Skype: Skype lets your parent have face to face video calls with family members and friends. This can be a fun way for grandparents to interact with grandchildren who live far away.
Senior Helper Apps:
-EyeReader: EyeReader turns your parent’s phone into a magnifying glass with a light. Hold the phone over text to enlarge the text and illuminate it.
-Silver Surf: This iPad app makes navigation buttons bigger so that seniors with manual dexterity problems can navigate more easily.
-Park’n’Forget: Your parent can use this app to track where they parked. Just enter the floor of the parking ramp, aisle, or parking spot. The app also allows users to keep track of how much time is left on their parking meter.
