Five Ways Mobility Loss Shows Up for Your Senior
Do you know what it looks like when your senior is having mobility trouble? If you don’t, you’re not alone. And if your senior is actively trying to hide that she’s having trouble, the situation may be even more difficult to spot.
She Seems to Be More Withdrawn
If you’re noticing that your elderly family member seems to be avoiding other people, that could be a sign of mobility trouble. She may begin to isolate herself if she doesn’t think that she’s going to be able to move about as freely as she used to. This can lead to other issues, too, especially if she’s withdrawing from everything.
You Hardly Ever See Her Up and Around
When you visit your senior, do you ever see her get up anymore? A common situation is that you might tell your senior, “No, don’t get up, I can get that.” But that can also mean that you never really see her up and moving about. If that’s the case, ask yourself why you’re not seeing her movements. It could be because she’s having more trouble than she did.
She’s Moving Very Slowly and Carefully
If you are seeing your senior get up and move around, how is she doing? If she’s moving around spryly and just like you’re accustomed to seeing, there might not be anything wrong. But if you’re noticing that her movements are very slow and careful, that could be because it’s taking a lot of her energy to try to make her movements seem as natural as always.
She Doesn’t Want to Go Anywhere
Any time that you invite your senior out, does she go or are there reasons she can’t go? This might sound similar to her not being as social as she used to be, but you may have more of a front row seat to the reasons she gives for not going anywhere. Look a little deeper at what’s going on.
She’s Experienced a Fall
Has your senior had an actual fall? If so, she may be afraid that she’ll fall again. That’s a reasonable fear, but it can cause her to lose even more of her mobility to fear than to an injury. Talk to your elderly family member’s doctor about what you need to do from here.
One answer for mobility concerns is to bring in a caregiver for your senior. They can help your elderly family member to get around safely and they can let you know if they’re seeing other issues, too.
