How to Incorporate Brain Games into Your Loved One’s Daily Activities
Senior Care in Manassas City VA
The brain is like the rest of your body. If you don’t use it, you can lose it. So it’s really important to keep your loved one’s brain active on a daily basis. You don’t have to start doing calculus equations over breakfast, but some of these activities can keep both your brain and your loved one’s engaged.
Choose Sensory Activities
Sensory activities are those that use your loved one’s different senses. Some of the activities you might choose include:
- Listening to or playing music
- Smelling new smells
- Playing in the dirt
- Playing with clay
- Watching clouds take different shapes
- Fingerpainting
All of these activities and more stimulate your loved one’s various senses, which engage those parts of her brain. Try as many different activities as your loved one wants in order to keep those parts of her brain going every day.
Play Word Games
Word games can be relaxing and challenging, all at the same time. Your loved one might enjoy doing word searches, crossword puzzles, or even scrambling and unscrambling words. You can find paper versions of lots of these types of games at drug stores and dollar stores, but you can also find them online and in apps on your smartphone. Don’t forget old standby board games that also use these types of skills, too.
Try Something Different
Routines are good for your loved one because she knows what to expect, but sometimes it’s good to try something different. Try going places via another route rather than the usual one or switch up your normal routine a tiny bit. If your loved one finds this agitating then it’s likely not a good activity for her, but it can also do her quite a bit of good if she’s up for this sort of change.
Go Somewhere New
You can also try going somewhere new, such as a different museum or restaurant than you’ve visited with your loved one before. These types of new experiences stimulate your loved one’s brain on all levels. Your loved one might also enjoy taking classes at the community college in the area or taking classes online.
Try asking your loved one’s doctor and senior care providers what other brain games would be good for your loved one’s specific situation.
